Understanding the Importance of ADAS Calibration After Windshield Replacement

An Advanced Driver(s) Assistance System, or ADAS, consists of various safety features designed to work together to prevent accidents and injuries. Your ADAS must be recalibrated following a windshield replacement so that certain safety features work correctly.

ADAS Calibration after windshield Replacement

What is ADAS, and Why Is It Important?

ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems) safety features are designed to work together to enhance vehicle safety. Feedback is received from the road through windshield-mounted cameras, radars, sensors, and lasers. ADAS features will utilize this feedback and alert or assist the driver in helping them avoid potential problems and collisions. Some common ADAS features include:

  • Adaptive Cruise Control
  • Adaptive Headlighting
  • Blind Spot Monitoring
  • Collision Assist (Front and Rear)
  • Driver Drowsiness Monitoring
  • Lane Departure Warning
  • Lane Keep Assist
  • Park Assist
  • Pedestrian Detection
  • Traffic Sign Recognition

How Does Windshield Replacement Impact ADAS?

ADAS features rely on feedback from the road to operate. These cameras are often mounted onto a vehicle’s windshield and other areas, such as the rear and front bumpers and side mirrors.

To install a replacement windshield, our technicians will need to remove the original, damaged windshield and then install the new replacement. In doing so, any cameras, sensors, radars, etc., that are mounted to the windshield will need to be removed from the damaged windshield and then reattached to the new windshield. This windshield replacement process will affect the accuracy of your ADAS readings, which can directly impact driver safety. Please consider the following about ADAS Calibration and Windshield Replacement.

  • If windshield-mounted cameras are not appropriately calibrated, ADAS safety features may not work as designed. The driver may receive inaccurate information. This puts the driver, their passengers, and other drivers at risk.
  • Auto manufacturers specify which cameras need to be recalibrated after a windshield replacement.
  • Without accurate road feedback, front-facing reliant ADAS features will not work as intended.

Imagine that you have a replacement windshield installed but do not recalibrate your ADAS after the fact. These ADAS features will still work, but they will be basing their alerts on inaccurate road feedback.  Each vehicle manufacturer lists specifications for how an ADAS needs to be synched with its internal system. Having these cameras and sensors misaligned, even if only slightly, is cause for concern.
